Cities! Cars! Lights! Horns blaring, people walking, skyscrapers..... The life in a big city is exciting and fast paced. But, why aren't all cities BIG cities? How does a city become a BIG city? Can your city ever become one of the BIG cities?
The mayor of your town wants the city to grow. As a member of his city council he needs information on the history of US big cities and then some suggestions of how to help your city grow. What does a city need to have?
The mayor needs your help to decide if your city can grow and be like one of the BIG cities? What do the BIG cities have that your city doesn't? Have they always been big cities?

You and your council members will create a multimedia presentation showing the history of a large city and how it became one of the BIG cities. Then give commendations of how your city can grow.

Day 1

  • Sit class in the floor. They will not be using their regular computer.
  • Read the introduction above.
  • As a class create a list of what you think are the cities in the US with the largest populations?
  • Check out the top population cities
  • Put class in partners.
  • Partners choose a city that they want to research.
  • Type their question in SMART Ideas
  • Ask: What do you know about the large city you chose? What do you need to know about it to understand how it grew and what the history of it is? Do cities change over time? How?
  • Research the History of Cities together and take notes. (just first 3 sections.) Also in handout form.
  • Create a class list of questions to answer. "Where is the city located?" "Is it near a natural feature, man made feature?"
  • Put questions around in SI.
  • Save to L drive

Day 2

  • Sit in the floor by partner.
  • Go over safe Google searches.
  • Keep task in mind.
  • Partners go over each person's questions. Each partner choose 2 questions. Must be different.
  • Each partner answer certain questions.
  • Use resources to research city and put notes in SI

Day 3

  • Show sample videos
  • Using SMART Ideas make a plan for a video
  • Write out information in Word

Day 4

  • Create image folder in G: drive
  • Students work at one computer
  • Collect images that go with written report

Day 5

  • Give mini lesson on Movie Maker
  • Begin movie

Day 6

  • Finish movie
